Sustainability

Sustainability Is Part of Our Daily Work

Citycon has both the obligation and the opportunity to have a positive impact on people, communities, and the environment. We believe that acting responsibly creates longterm value. We are committed to sustainable development in all our operations. Citycon’s goal is to achieve carbon neutrality in Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030. Citycon strives for energyefficient properties that operate on 100% renewable energy.

Target: CarbonNeutral Shopping Centres (Scope 1 & 2) by 2030

A Koskikeskus, we believe that sustainability is built through concrete actions.
We actively strive to reduce our energy and water consumption and to increase our recycling rate. We monitor the property’s energy and water usage as well as waste streams and take prompt corrective actions based on these observations. Whenever we carry out necessary repairs in the building, we always consider opportunities to improve energy efficiency.
All the energy used in Koskikeskus is renewable. We can produce part of the energy ourselves by utilising the Tammerkoski rapids that flow beside us. The hydropower plant located in the centre produces both heating and cooling for Koskikeskus.
Koskikeskus has been awarded the BREEAM InUse environmental certification at the Very Good level. The certification covers both the technical features and maintenance of the centre, as well as its environmental management. BREEAM InUse is an international environmental assessment method for buildings, aiming to reduce the environmental impacts of building operations and to promote healthier indoor environments.
There are two beehives on the roof of Koskikeskus, housing a total of approximately 40,000 bees. Pollinating insects are vital to humans, as they pollinate most of the world’s plants. This ensures that both cultivated crops and wild berries remain abundant. At the same time, bees support biodiversity and produce valuable goods, such as raw materials for the pharmaceutical industry and honey. The honey produced by the Koskikeskus bees can be tasted in the shopping centre’s cafés.

Citycon’s Sustainability Strategy Is Based on Two Focus Areas
